Is the rod change assembly on an ADO16 the same as a Mini ?

If not, does anyone have a spare one ?

Hi Andrew, Luis is correct, the selector rod and steady rod are much longer than the Mini. The rear bracket is also different on the ADO16. The gear shift mechanism, gearlever and selector coupling are the same as the Mini. The early rod change Vanden Plas had a chrome gear lever. My mate Paddy has a complete ADO16 assembly and I will ask him to bring it over later so that I can show you what they are like. I’m sure he would sell it to you. Will post photographs later. :)

Andrew, Paddy dropped that rod change gear shift mechanism over to me there now. It has the correct rear bracket and inside plate attached with the correct size bobbins. The selector coupling needs only a front roll pin. You would need a gearlever and bush flange to complete this setup. Paddy said your dad can have it all complete for £40 plus postage. I would be happy to post it over if you wanted? It is from a 1973 Austin 1300 Mk3. It is in very good condition I can assure you. :)

As an ADO16 and Rover P6 owner, it is interesting to note that in roughly the same time (actually give or take a couple of years) the ADO16 changed from remote to rod gearchange, while the P6 went from rod to remote!

Hi Demetris, the P6 was a well advanced car nonetheless, loved them as well :D

Hi Alan, i think that i prefer the early systems in both cars, although a Rover remote in good nick is not bad at all. However i cannot tell the same for the ADO16 rod change, it always felt lifeless and slopy.

Thanks for all the interesting posts on this topic :)

Alan, I think Dad is going to go with a remote box so will not need the rod change from Paddy ... not 100% but probably 95%. Thanks to you both for your offer and help and if we do go rod route I'll be in touch. :)

We both prefer the remote gearchange to the rod set up, once all the linkages are set up correctly it is a nice set up.

We will also be using the front subframe from an earlier MG that had a remote box. I think (correct me if I am wrong) that the rod box subframe had an extra stabiliser down below at the back, which the earlier frame had no mounting for.

Hi Andrew, I also prefer the remote gearbox in the ADO16. Yes the rod change and automatics had a bracket on the subframe and used a tie-bar similar to the Mini. You will also find the remote parts are much easier to find than the rod parts without doubt.

Let us know how things progress :D :D
