I went a few years ago to a talk by Derek Bell and he got onto the LeMans film and Steve McQueen and LeMans came into the talk. He said that whilst McQueen was a capable driver he fancied himself running at the top level and asked Bell whilst filming LeMans if he would take him on a flying lap in one of the adapted 917's. Bell said he didn't spare the horses and when they came to the stops in the pits McQueen was shaking and told Bell he thought he could drive at 10/10ths but after a flying lap with Bell he clearly could not. Bell said it took McQueen a fair while to settle after the run.
