Starter motors

Post by iain1967s »

Just bought a new mini starter motor from Somerford Mini, after mine broke apart one of the field coils.

But the new one has a 10 tooth bendix gear with squarer profile. That doesn’t seem right... the one I removed is 9 tooth and more triangular.

Emailed them, and they said “these starters are interchangeable and will engage with all inertia type flywheels”.

Yes, I’m sure they will engage... at least long enough to strip the teeth off the flywheel ring gear.

I‘ll be reusing the original gear from the old motor.

I fitted the old 9 tooth bendix/gear to the new motor and junked the 10 tooth.

Didn’t have a spring compressor so used a couple of pairs of mole grips... it did the job :D
