Absolutely gutted yesterday that ‘Big Map’ Roy Mapple has passed away, one of my heroes and original owner of the Orangebox . He could drive anything and a lovely man. Was only talking to him in his workshop a few weeks back and was proud to see he had a photo of the Orangebox on a rally with ME driving it. RIP Roy , that little orange car will keep your memory alive I promise.

Yep sad news Steve, only met Roy for the first time 4 years ago, but since then he became a good customer and a good friend, popping in regular for a brew, often with Janet. Always a story, on the Orangebox, Cooper S, Rover, BMW 2002, or when he did the Lombard revival in 2008 in a ZR after a bet with fellow garage owner David Smith who would finish the higher !, i could sit and listen for ages.

RIP Big fella, ill miss your visits and all your stories

Sad news indeed.

At least Steve & the orange box are still here to continue to tell the stories.

Roy competed on the infamous snowy 1965 Monte won by Makinen in AJB44B , with another northern rally man, Roy Kirkham in a new red 970 KTD200C. They retired after Mapple clouted a kilometre stone hidden in the snow, he had been doing the majority of the driving as he was a demon on ice. I was chatting to Mapple only weeks ago, when he casually mentioned when they hit the stone and retired, they were leading the class by 14 MINUTES :o 8-) !
