Just had a cheeky wee weekend away and drove part of the route on our way to stay in an Air B&B in Eskdalemuir.

Wish I'd been in a proper mini, not the modern 'MINI' - yes there are a few potholes, but on the whole it's not too bad, with good sightlines and next to no traffic. I did get a puncture, but from picking up a nail, not the potholes. By good luck it was a 'run flat' that picked up the nail (it's not a full set, it seems?!?) so I'm off for a new tyre this evening.

I'm hoping to do a full route recce the week after next, but better weather for May would be nice -it was a bit 'driech'

Great News Al!

I was fettling the cars we are bringing with us this weekend. Hopefully the Moke & the 1300. Need to get some MOTs sorted first though :)

Should be a super weekend.

As my stupid low profile (45 section) tyres protested over a couple of bits, I did think wistfully of a 1300 on 70 profiles and hydro.

(I watch my inbox with baited breath for news from 'the phantom poster' )

Brief scare last night when Nigel / Carbon told me the Jim Clark Rally which is scheduled to return after several years was apparently 'pencilled in' for that weekend and possibly using many of the same roads...…

It's OK though, I've spoken with them, and they will not be running that weekend, but plan to run it later in the year.

Phew!

Wow, what a day I've had - cracking weather forecast, so i decided to do a 'dry run', and I had a blast (aside from nearly getting squashed off a small cliff by stunt bicyclist Danny Mcaskill in his HUGE transporter on a very narrow track :o ).

I left Peebles at 10.00 and was back there at 4pm, with a decent stop for lunch and a cuppa en route, so I think about 4 1/2 hours on the road, to do the 180 miles, giving an average of 40mph

Important lessons learnt were that the timings / distance mean Moffat is a good spot for a coffee stop, and Selkirk or Hawick would be good for lunch - still a bit of work needed here to find somewhere decent open on a Sunday..... My Supermarket toastie was mediocre

Nick, any ideas?

A lot of the roads seem to have been relaid recently and are pretty amazing, considering how remote some of them are - just the stretch from Langholm to Eskdalemuir is poor.

So, if anyone is thinking 'My god, I'm going to be bored by the end of a whole summer of parking my mini beside various race tracks the length and breadth of the country whilst other folk drive', here are a few photos to tempt you into coming along on the 26th May......

I'll bring a sheet to Blyton so I can get an idea of who's coming along (driver or passenger) as well as who's meeting up for a chat and some food on the Saturday (the Tontine are looking for an idea of numbers)

Now, where's my aftersun?

That's what I'd have thought, but not too much seemed open.

The one by the garage at Selkirk looked closed, as that was one I'd thought off. I can't believe a place the size of Hawick doesn't have a garden centre (the sort of place that would have plenty parking).

I did see the cinema as I left the end of the high street does food, but I'm not sure how big it is. Will ask my pal from down that way if he's been -EDIT - they are able to accommodate groups, and seem a good bet.
