The standards at BAT have really dropped lately.

While there's some nice aspects of this car as a driver (and the build quality looks reasonably good), you cannot keep calling it a Mini Cooper without the chassis VIN tag to back up that claim -- or even the original motor for that matter.

With the oil filter in that position...isn't it a SA engine?

"The South African Mini local content programme was introduced in three phases. Phase III set a bench mark of 65% local content (by weight) to be achieved by the end of 1976. The Mini reached this target in August 1975, a full seventeen months ahead of schedule. A major part of this was a new engine block, which was cast in South Africa by Gearings Foundary, at Epping, Cape Town. Based on the UK 1275cc Cooper S engine block, the South African engines featured integral side covers and an internal oil filter gallery, which allowed the filter to be placed high on the block, above the starter motor."

I think that block was also used in the 1300cc Marina.

Don't forget that in the USA most people see every Mini they come across as a "Mini Cooper" so most of the "anorakia" here (head stud count, FE number used for legal paperwork, etc.), is totally moot to them.

... a fact well exploited by BMW; there are no base model MINIs sold in the USA - all variants here are badged as either Cooper, Cooper S or John Cooper Works.

Bidding is now at $18.5USD....car is still advertised as MK1 Cooper.....thought someone might have had an issue with that!

Interesting to read the comments on the bid thread!

To be fair - the vast majority of the time that original Minis were available in the USA, the Mini Cooper was offered (since Mini imports ceased after '67), and it seems like most of the minis sold here were, in fact, Cooper or Cooper S models.

That's how consumers here couldn't separate the Mini from Cooper -- and BMW certainly capitalized on that in 2003.
