 Post subject: Strange chassis number

Not MK1 related but as there are some knowledgeable peeps on here thought I would ask.

Trying to help a customer identify a car he's picked up. Car is located the other end of the country so I've not seen it in person. It's recently been imported to NZ from overseas and was supposedly setup for a rally of some sort in Africa. Car is thought to be a 1995 and has chassis number starting SABTBR**********. This is on the chassis plate and also stamped into the gully on the scuttle in the normal spot for later model cars.

Anyone got any clues?

I think you may mean sabtvro? ,that’s a local office Dvla chassis number,the next 3 digits are the office identifier ie 368 was reading,then the year issued ,these chassis numbers are mostly found on a plate cars ,but also on the odd cars with normal registration numbers that were stolen recovered with original chassis number missing,or built from parts ,if so v5 will read assembled from parts some or all of which were no new

These types of chassis numbers are given to various cars including kit cars and rebuilt cars by the DVLA. If the age of the parts can not be determined or it does not meet the DVLA requirements to establish age then it is given a Q plate and not an age related plate. However the original reg document will only show the date of first registartion, which may not be the actual age of the car.

This is a break down of how the VIN is made up

SABT - a DVLA issued number
VRO - issued from a local office
XXX - (8-10th digits) number of the issuing office
x - (11th digit) year of VIN issue
xxx - (12-14th digits) issue date in Julian calendar.
xxx - (15-17th digits) Unique serial number.


I do hope your local registration people are easy to get on with as some around the world will not allow the car to be road registered as it would be difficult to prove type approval from the chassis number.
