Seams like a popular conversion over that side of the pond.

Entering Volkswagen Beetle Woody into an image search revels quite a few, some good, some bad. This one even has a late '30s Ford style grille and hood.

Maybe they wanted the best of both old VW worlds. The power of a VW Beetle and the aerodynamics of a microbus.

In Singapore when we Dad would take a VW Eurovan from the office to drive up to Malaysia to go diving we would have to turn off the AC to get the extra few horsepower back to overtake and pass anyone ahead of us.

Wasn't there a momentary switch under the throttle pedal on spi minis with AC for the same purpose? Fully automatic of course.
