I think this one was on eBay about a year ago, if so Ben bought it and I think it’s awaiting restoration.

That's good, at least the infamous Norwich Mini dealer didn't get his hands on it :)

A40 had the same ones (the round ones), Aussie mokes used Elf / ADO16 units, I think.

Al

Wasn't the ones on the MG 1300 the same version?

I’ve been in the barn and have sorted a few 970 bits,
151 block +20, std crank, etc etc ...
cams Kent 800 sw10 & sw23 are on the self. Any in put?
Rockers? I have std S, mini spares 1.5 non roller & 1.3, 1.5, 1.7 roller rockers.??
Flywheel? Steel ultra light? Front pulley No idea ?
Heads? Which valves work best? Big inlet-small exhaust? Revs not toque..
Exhaust - maniflow lcb..RC40 or maniflow 1 7/8?
Carbs H4’s?
Water pump- pully size/ speed, will it clear the head?
Fan, which fan will take the revs best.. plastic ones explode/ metal ones bend and distroy the rad?
Starter, I have a MED race one, I’ve had problems with std ones pulling into the flywheel at high revs? = sparks.. bang...
Charging- ? I’ve no idea which will work best.. pully size?
The bits we forget studs/ bolts these are one of the most important parts for me, ARP? Or anything else?
It may sound silly but what size fuel pipes are you running volume/ pressure, pumps/reg..
I’ve never played with a 970 so the more help the better, I’d like fast road fun not flat out race.

Gearbox, I’ve got 333 box, 3.7 fd twin cross pin diff H/S output, central oil pick up?
I have some 1128’s but feel 333 is in keeping with 970. I can’t justify putting a 190 box in a moke.

Has anyone got any other ideas, any input welcome..

With the bits there you will be able to make a really nice 970 S screamer.

Buildinmg one is really not that different to any other engine, I have built a few 970's and most of them have been reliable & reasonably powerful.

To run through the check list above.

151 block +20, std crank, etc etc ...
A Great start, it would be better with a bigger bore, but it is pointless boring an S block just to make capacity.

Hum, tricky, the SW23 if you are going for ultimate power, but this may NOT be the best bet in a Moke. I have had a 100mph+ Moke & TBH it wasn't the most relaxing driver. Personally I'd go for a 544 or 286 type equivalent to give decent power that is still driveable (ish).

Rockers? I have std S, mini spares 1.5 non roller & 1.3, 1.5, 1.7 roller rockers.??
1.5 NON roller.

Flywheel? Steel ultra light? Front pulley No idea ?
Ultralight will be Ok, but steer clear of featherlight flywheels, they are just too light for a 970 on the road.

Heads? Which valves work best? Big inlet-small exhaust? Revs not toque..
Std valves will be fine, DON'T go for a head with huge ports, it won't work. A Stage 1 head with MK3 Standard valves would be IDEAL.

Exhaust - maniflow lcb..RC40 or maniflow 1 7/8?
My preference would be RC40, I find the Maniflow systems too noisey.

Carbs H4’s?
I'd go for a single 45 for the sort of setup you seem to be looking at, but H4's would be fine.

Water pump- pully size/ speed, will it clear the head?
Standard, but you will probably have to grind a bit off the lug at the front.

Fan, which fan will take the revs best.. plastic ones explode/ metal ones bend and distroy the rad?
Plastic, plastic, plastic - EVERY TIME.

Starter, I have a MED race one, I’ve had problems with std ones pulling into the flywheel at high revs? = sparks.. Bang...
Not experienced that myself.

Charging- ? I’ve no idea which will work best.. pully size?
If you are using an Altenator, it doesn't matter, if you are using a Dynamo, then you will need a large pulley like the old ST one, I believe they were about 4 - 4.5" in dia.

The bits we forget studs/ bolts these are one of the most important parts for me, ARP? Or anything else?
ARP Mains & big ends.

BALANCE EVERYTHING!

It may sound silly but what size fuel pipes are you running volume/ pressure, pumps/reg..
A standard small facet pump will be fine, pressure depends on what carb you choose.

I’ve never played with a 970 so the more help the better, I’d like fast road fun not flat out race.
This is the tricky one. If you really are after fast-ish fun, then you would be better off with a MUCH less peaky engine than it looks like you are thinking about. You shopuld be aiming for around 60 - 65 BHP, which is a standard 970. Mokes are MUCH lighter than a normal Mini & despite the shape they are very easy to make fly. As I said above, my 1300 7 Port was WAY too fast.

Driving an English Moke at high speeds can be a VERY SCARY experience.

Gearbox, I’ve got 333 box, 3.7 fd twin cross pin diff H/S output, central oil pick up?
Perfect.

I have some 1128’s but feel 333 is in keeping with 970. I can’t justify putting a 190 box in a moke.
Too right.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you want to chat about details.

M

PS. My current Moke has a standard 998 in it & it is more enjoyable than the fast one ever was. Although I do plan on building a high torque 60odd bhp engine for it at some time.

PPS. Seat belts are ESSENTIAL in an English Moke. The seats are above the sides & I had a couple of occasions where I very, very nearly lost passengers out of it during cornering. This would NOT have been funny.

The engine is with the local ish well known engine builder.
It should be 999cc with a sw5 cam & mini spares/Calver head.
Steel flywheel etc steel light weight cam gears, H4 carbs..
Looking good.

I wonder if it's been restored...

Where was that one? It looks just like the car my Dad and I went to look at in 1982 for £500. Didn't buy it because it had a 1300GT engine.
