Even allowing for the speeded up film I'm not sure that I'd have wanted to be a passenger in it!
Yes, very little traffic compared with today.

I've just had a look at the route on Google and it is still doable, then only bit that has changed is were the A66 has been built at the junction of Ayresome Grange Road and Newport Road. If I am bored and remember I might go out and remake the film just to see how traffic compares today.
