For those interested . I've owned mostly all the combinations of mini coopers . Mk1 / 2 // 3 . Never owned a 970S but it was the one I always wanted. .. So I'm in mini minispares potters bar and I'm stocking up big time with lots of panels and parts as you do . In walks a elderly old gentleman with some photos and a add written out . I asked him what he was selling and he replied it was time to let his Cooper S go to another home . He said it was a 970S and to be honest I've heard this all before and they've turned out to be 997 coopers . So I took his details and said I will be in touch . That evening I phoned Simon wheatcroft , who confirmed it as a 970S and gave me chassis number / engine number / details etc . Went to see the car and with a bit of negotiation the mini was mine ... plus I purchased all of his spares witch filled up a transit van .. It's not concours , but is in excellent all round condition . It wants detailing under the bonnet , as in , he preferred a 4 synchro box , it's got wrong head fitted . The original parts supplied . It drives extremely well and I've just had it m.o.t .. ... Right place , right time . I could have easily missed him as I was just finishing loading my van . ... ken

Looks very nice Ken, are you heading for Beaulieu in it this weekend?

Crikey Ken that was a bit of luck, must have been meant for you. It looks pristine in the photos.

Ever used in competition or a road car?

Unbelievable! What a find, Ken.

Congrats on the find, and your amazing timing. The car looks superb - an Almond Green 970 S is basically my holy grail when it comes to Minis.

Yes Simon should be at beaulieu, thanks for info . Havnt done anything to it except m.o.t . I've got a pile of mots with it so will continue in my ownership . Bit of a change for me this one . Im normally restoring the life out of them from the floor pan upwards . It's far to good in its present condition to go ripping it apart . After beaulieu it will be my first let's say ( sympathetic ) restoration . The inside only needs a carpet . I will drop the engine unit out and replace the gearbox to a 3 synchro , other jobs are just mainly under the bonnet . Recondition and fit servo , fit the correct airbox and cylinder head . I've got a genuine nos exhaust manifold and system that's been waiting for the right mini to use it on . Its sitting on repro S wheels but correct wheels came with the car .. i have a couple of questions . Built in October 64 .
1. Should it have 333 or 190 gearbox
2. Heritage doesn't state oil cooler . Should it have one fitted ?

Has it been raced or anything in the previous years . Who knows ? Shell changed , most have let's be honest . Think I will enjoy it for what it is and use it ... By the way , don't these 970S rev well .

My October 64 970s has a 333 box.
And yes they do rev..a lot!
Have seen 9500 regularly.

Lovely find! The box should be a 333 with the letter X and stamped 9F something something. The oil cooler would the vertical type that fits under the dynamo.
Enjoy! Rarest of all the S’s
