Mark would love to hear Eric’s stories of his many years in Kane’s garage.

I certainly would, & would love to add a bit more to the main site on Kane's too.

Nice Xmas photo of LSE taken 1966. Sorry about the poor quality it a newspaper scan, but it still gives an idea how big these guys were. At that time there was only 2 rolling roads in south of Ireland and LSE had one of them.

Father Christmas worked there too!

That is a cracking article! What publication is it taken from? Also another great pic. The showroom certainly looks bigger than most. Any idea what happened to LSE?

It’s from an old Irish mag called Wheels, very hard to find. I think it was closed down sometime in the mid 80’s.

I’ve been doing a bit of research on Irish Cooper S’s and came across some nice adverts from the 2 heavyweight tuning companies Speedwell and Downton. The Speedwell agents were based in Dublin (SI) with a company called LSE and were owned and run by the Hayes family. The Downton Agents were based in Comber (NI) and was owned and run by the Kane family. Below are some of there adverts that you guys might enjoy.

I wonder was the Hayes family that owned LSE linked to Johnny Hayes the racing driver?

Yes John and Maurice Hayes were Owens 2 sons, both had Speedwell 1071 Irish built Cooper S’s. IZH1 (Black with red roof) is very well know for its famous photo in 2 of the Speedwell brochures and car and car conversions etc. IZH1 lost her Speedwell 1071 engine in ‘66 as it wasn’t competitive against the 1275’s it was fitted with an 850 engine to use as a run about as cooper S insurance was very expensive back then. It’s engine was fitted to an Irish built Marcos that was used for motor racing. IZH2 (Red with OEW roof) was used in competition for nearly all of it life and is now being restored in the west of Ireland. There might be some good news on IZH1 as I have a lead on the remains of the car, fingers crossed!
