Kind of curious as to why all of my 1071 blocks and AEG163 heads were painted blue...
Anyone have an explanation???
It must have been really good paint...it still shows through worn areas of the BMC green engine paint!

In the late 1960s and 1970s with the increase of people modding their minis ,machine shops and engineering companies painted reworked engine blocks and cylinder heads for customers blue it became a fashionable/fad and showed that the engine had been worked on.

That is rubbish, I was told by an ex factory worker who spent some time on head assembly that the blocks ( so I assume heads aswell) were different colours to make them easy to identify, they went through a phase of mixing engines up.

The blue paint was applied in the factory, we've discussed it before on here when someone was selling a NOS 1071 block, painted this colour. I've seen other blocks, heads, including 940 heads the same colour.

Early 185 S heads were always yellow, later 163 S heads were blue.

People used to refer to the "Blue" S head as being the one suitable for modifying.

I agree with Nippy in that they were probably painted different colours for ease of identification.

Just scraped a little paint of my FJ block...yep, it has yellow paint under the green...The other regular 1071 blocks are all blue under the green paint.
Then, I looked at the 163 heads..three are blue and one is yellow...
So, sounds like Mark is right.

Here is one of my 1071 FJ blocks in blue paint, my other 2x standard 1071 blocks both original and only in green paint?
