Hi

Race season is over now I have time to sort this car out....

FE306116 front end number

Image

Marked Stamped NMP

Image

Then i stripped the paint off the RH triangle and found

828926

Based on forum Feed back its a 1961 Morris

I went to the British Heritage Site found the following

Mini Cooper and Cooper S Mark II
What is the chassis number?
The chassis number for a Mark II Mini Cooper consists of a five or six character prefix followed by a unique number of up to seven figures. Examples of which are as follows:
C-A2SB/…… for Austin Coopers
C-A2SB-L/…… for Austin Coopers (left hand drive)
K-A2S6/…… for Morris Coopers
K-A2S6-L/…… for Morris Coopers (left hand drive)
Where do you find the chassis number?
The chassis plate is secured to the top of the radiator cowling between the radiator and inner wing. For later Mark IIs the plate was relocated to the top of the bonnet locking platform, adjacent to the horn.
Mini

so what would the VIN number be

K-A2S6-L828926 VIN NUMBER

i can not find the original color any where , I checked in the hard to reach spots ...

K-A2S4 is the prefix for a Morris Mk1

828926 would put it as late 1965 on hydrolastic, based on the change points in Parnell

(correcting my earlier post)

The K prefix is assuming it’s a Morris Cooper shell originally.

But you said you think it's 1961 based on the FE number. Simon would know for sure.

If that's the case then this doesn't seem like it would be a Cooper shell with a chassis number that high that early.

But if it was a regular Morris 850 etc it would be M prefix and the chassis number would then place it earlier.

i.e. M-A2S4

L is the prefix for a LHD, but you have to consider the intermediate letters S for Super, D for Deluxe as a possibility too...

Your car is too early to be a mark 2. They started in October 1967.

The chassis number would therefore not begin *-A2S6/B but *-A2S4 (Morris) or *-A2S7 (Austin).
See this page for a better indication:
https://www.minimania.com/Classic_Mini_ ... tion_Guide

It cannot be a Cooper S model as that was not introduced until January 1963.

I don't think your car can be a Cooper because as I recall all Coopers were made at Longbridge, as yours is a Cowley car then it would be a Morris with a chassis prefix of M.

I know its not a S
I know for sure its a morris ... left hand drive
I know its a mark one
has the snap in carpets ,, rivits are still in tact with steel brackets riveted to the floor
the FE number is clear on rad cowl
has full front skirt ,,, no notch on both sides

so I thinks its K-A2S4L 828926 VIN NUMBER

Hi Jim what makes you so sure it is a Cooper please?

The fact it was assembled at Cowley and has and NMP shell would strongly indicate that it cannot be a Cooper. As far as I am aware no Cooper or Cooper S was assembled at Cowley, they were all built at Longbridge.

Austin and Morris Minis were built at Cowley as they were at Longbridge. So that said, your chassis number would begin M-A2S4 L -****** and would have been an 850cc unit.

FE306116 is from April 1962
828926 makes no sense as a chassis number for a Morris Mini non Cooper saloon as they never got beyond 509152 for a Mk 1.
828926 which is from December 1965 doesn't look like a Cooper chassis number.
Have you a picture of the 828926 stamping?

thank you

I thought snap in carpets made it a cooper

so morris 850 minis in April 1962 came with snap in carpets ?

M-A2S4 L ######

so I need to figure out the last 6 digits of the VIN

thank you Simon

the stamping is hard to take a picture of

_2_9_6 these numbers are as clear as mud

the way they stamped the three _ numbers is not square to steel

I have cleaned down to metal carefully ,,, I used brake fluid ( works great when you want paint off )

M-A2S4 L -****** and would have been an 850cc unit APRIL 1962
