I just watched the youtube clip.

Damn awesome, another perspective of the Cooper Car Co & of course, the Mini Cooper.

But it also once again highlighted the biggest problem nearly all car makers had back then and still today.

They don't have a clue who the customers are and what they want. Many also have no idea what the buyers want to do with the cars they make.

Harriman: "How many do we need to make?"
Cooper: "We need to make 1000 in a year"
Harriman: "I don't think we can sell 1000" (and I always got the impression he meant ever)

And of course, they sold over 100 000,,,,,,,

In another way, the same story plays out these days with the makers of 4WD all terrain vehicles,,,,,,

Thanks mab01uk, really enjoyed that heaps :)

"Don't keep asking my why Reg, it just happens to be that way..." :)

Great videos too by the way!

BMC could have been saved in 1966/7. If they had taken up the Pininfarina Aero rebodies of the 1300 and 1800 - with a hatchback - no Maxi, no Austin 3 Litre, no Princess. BLMC could have been a world leader well into the eighties. Nobody could have foreseen the Capri success.....but the MGC? They were clueless, p*ss*ng money away on lame ducks like that and the Austin 3 Litre. Who in earth did they think was going to buy that?

The R50 MINI will be 20 years old in 2021 - who would have thought it?

I know it's edging off at a bit of a tangent, but even when they made cars that people did want - they painted 'em in colours that they DIDN'T want......! Tundra......... I mean......., who on earth thought that was a good idea in 1974? My brothers 1945 Bedford QL is painted in that colour. Aqua....... very nice(?) now in a rose tinted glasses, nostalgic sort of way. But sales were abysmal. Grizzle for today over.
