Callum,

What is the registration of your Mk2? Are the digits on your plates plastic or aluminium?

I've thought of using an old plate with new letters, the problem you will find is the holes for your letters will not match the existing ones on the plates. I guess the only way round it would be to TiG the old holes up and then punch new ones for the replacements.

If the Hills plate part is in short supply it'd be the simplest pressing in the world to reproduce. As for the HILLS logo, that's a simple laser etched press die too. That style of plate without the HILLS logo were the most common of all. Borehams at Newbury had them in black or plain alloy. If you wanted yellow/white they would roll the reflective strip onto the plain alloy then mark it on a template and punch the holes. Or am I missing something? Or is it the numbers that are the rocking horse manure

From my mates' searches at Beaulieu etc, its the digits which are the hardest thing to find. Grey / silver / cream / white in colour - peaked or flat shape - seriphed or plain text - italic / computer / plain font, the options are many.

Tho I'm sure there are many who would buy repro backing plates if someone wants bite the bullet and commision some to be made.

Brave man Mk1. It's all about putting your hand into your pockets. And sometimes they need to be DEEP pockets too. But not in the case of these backing plates I feel. For eye wateringly deep pockets ask me about having optical duplo plano convex optical lenses made

Alternative solution for the rear of car .. just buy the cheap & good quality Minispares hinged rear number plate, then mount your number plate digits direct onto the Minispares hinged plate.. nice easy to clean solution for a rear number plate.
