Good old BMC! The 948 was a cracking little motor really, the 803 excepted - that really was shite. When I think back to how I used to treat old Minis, flat out 75-80 for miles on end. Check the oil? Eh? I only 'broke' one, a 1975 N reg Mini 1000 what sat on the M4 from Newbury to Reading, 4 up and with the speedo reading 85-90. Probably a continuous 5500 rpm.

"What's that smell?"

Looked in the mirror - clouds of oil smoke, backed off to 60 and it stopped. It did use a lot of oil after that but it went alright.

Did you spot that all the cars were UK registered but LHD? Clearly they had done their homework in setting the whole test up.

Love the fluttering windscreen wiper at 80mph on the Austin Cambridge. We really didn't design for speed until the Mways arrived. On an XK120 the tiny wipers lifted off at 60-ish, about half maximum speed
