i wonder what sort of claim the buyer could have against the auction house if it all goes tits up?

I'm sure plenty of people advised them about the doubt of the history

There's been a fair bit of case law on these sorts of 'what you see is what you get' auctions and the very similar 'what you see written is what you get' auctions. Similar, but alas, different in consumer law! They are carefully worded so as to avoid any comeback. Not only that, the auction houses are VERY wealthy - on the back of the buyers and sellers of course - so you take them on at your financial peril. So says my sister who is a retired Barrister. A wealthy retired Barrister to boot, wealthy on the stupidity of others she says! Cars and paintings are a nightmare

No mention of the car's back story at all by the auctioneer, at 12.55 on this clip :

The picture and sound break up just for this lot and recovers immediately after the hammer goes down, a conspiracy theory in the making!

Bloody ludicrous!

Still, they do say that there is one born every minute.

So it turns out that the original 777 MCG (that 'shares' the same chassis number as this car) was grass tracked and eventually taken to the scrap yard?!!! Without its S engine that it lost years previous to that. Sounds like somebody had a peak at the original paperwork and... Hey presto like a Phoenix from the flames. But the truth is a whole lot more scandalous than even that. Another skeleton that's appeared from the closet.

So what about the chap from Grimsby way who says he has the paperwork for 777 MCG?

Years ago, I met a chap from Anglesey who had a logbook and Heritage 'proof-of-absolute-authenticity, honest Guv' for 777MCG.

The car should be nicknamed Spartacus.
