Hmm, could be that they were experimenting with the casting of the gearboxes, perhaps to avoid hot spots (cooling time) or porosity. Or just simplifying the number of casting blocks. My penny ?

Just found one of these... So, you're saying it's 4-sync?

Bhahaahaha,,,,, I'm guessing this one was a dud when first assemble and didn't leak Oil, so they modified it to correct that

Yes, 4 synchro. Similar to the 22G1128.

I agree with all, seen this gearbox in the Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornets and very early ADO16 1275cc cars that had the Cooper S crank and rods. They are really a very good box because we used them in motorsport :)

What I find as well is that they tend to be in early 1967 cars :?:

...Many seem to dismiss the 22G846 box as being just Elf / Hornet but as I'm sure you are aware Alan at least some of the examples fitted to early 1300cc ADO16's (MG's / Riley Kestrels) were fitted with close ratio gears so always worth checking (See Austin 1300GT thread a few months back)

My old Mk3S had one, complete with 22G1040 laygear and Hardy Spicer diff, I still have it as I fitted the only other 4 syncro remote box, 22G1128.
