Hi all,
What info does anyone have on this gearbox number, i have been told it its from an elf or hornet, is this correct.
also i have noticed that the casting is very rough inside the box.
I have also had to grind and file the casing in a couple of spots to get it to fit on my engine!
(1100S)
Has anybody seen this before, it looks like when the casing was orignally machined that whoever was doing it got it a little bit wrong
Somehow I ended up with two of these casings here in Oz (we never had elf/hornets except personal import), there seem to be quite a few 846 casings here, I think we must have got a job-lot when they first started making them? strange.
I recently bought one of these for a very good price. Has anyone unearthed any more information on why they made it and what is different to the 1128?
Mine is currently fitted with a 3.4 diff, rubber crosses and a set of gears in much better condition to the ones in my 1128.
I own a 998 Austin Cooper MK1 from 67 from England fittet with this gearbox. As the engine and body are matching numbers and all other tiny little items are matching with the production dates, I assume the 22G846 Gearbox was factory fitted.
Hmm, could be that they were experimenting with the casting of the gearboxes, perhaps to avoid hot spots (cooling time) or porosity. Or just simplifying the number of casting blocks. My penny ?

I agree with all, seen this gearbox in the Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornets and very early ADO16 1275cc cars that had the Cooper S crank and rods. They are really a very good box because we used them in motorsport

...Many seem to dismiss the 22G846 box as being just Elf / Hornet but as I'm sure you are aware Alan at least some of the examples fitted to early 1300cc ADO16's (MG's / Riley Kestrels) were fitted with close ratio gears so always worth checking (See Austin 1300GT thread a few months back)
