22G846 Gearbox ?

Post by 850GT »

Hi all,
What info does anyone have on this gearbox number, i have been told it its from an elf or hornet, is this correct.
also i have noticed that the casting is very rough inside the box.

I have also had to grind and file the casing in a couple of spots to get it to fit on my engine!
(1100S)

Has anybody seen this before, it looks like when the casing was orignally machined that whoever was doing it got it a little bit wrong

Thanks Scott

Yup, I had the same problems with one of these boxes, definitely Elf / Hornet.

they are an elf case, but very odd as they are far chunkier around the diff area.

a real pain if you have to grind them to fit an lsd.

they are a cheap case to buy, as nobody knows what they are for and many people think they are three sync
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

Somehow I ended up with two of these casings here in Oz (we never had elf/hornets except personal import), there seem to be quite a few 846 casings here, I think we must have got a job-lot when they first started making them? strange.

cheers

I think that Bart considers them to be Elf/Hornet but I have an idea i have at least 1 with ADO16 diff housing. I need to check.

I recently bought one of these for a very good price. Has anyone unearthed any more information on why they made it and what is different to the 1128?
Mine is currently fitted with a 3.4 diff, rubber crosses and a set of gears in much better condition to the ones in my 1128.

Why on earth did they do a specific Elf casting?? To make production more expensive?

I had one of these years ago - research at the time seemed to suggest that they where also fitted to a BMC van of the period...

Can't think which that might have been though..?

I own a 998 Austin Cooper MK1 from 67 from England fittet with this gearbox. As the engine and body are matching numbers and all other tiny little items are matching with the production dates, I assume the 22G846 Gearbox was factory fitted.

Hmm, could be that they were experimenting with the casting of the gearboxes, perhaps to avoid hot spots (cooling time) or porosity. Or just simplifying the number of casting blocks. My penny ?

Just found one of these... So, you're saying it's 4-sync?

Yes, 4 synchro. Similar to the 22G1128.

I agree with all, seen this gearbox in the Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornets and very early ADO16 1275cc cars that had the Cooper S crank and rods. They are really a very good box because we used them in motorsport :)

What I find as well is that they tend to be in early 1967 cars :?:

...Many seem to dismiss the 22G846 box as being just Elf / Hornet but as I'm sure you are aware Alan at least some of the examples fitted to early 1300cc ADO16's (MG's / Riley Kestrels) were fitted with close ratio gears so always worth checking (See Austin 1300GT thread a few months back)

My old Mk3S had one, complete with 22G1040 laygear and Hardy Spicer diff, I still have it as I fitted the only other 4 syncro remote box, 22G1128.
