Just a quick heads up for those going to Beaulieu. The M3 is closed between Junction 2 (M25) and Jucntion 3 (Bagshot) all weekend. So if you are travelling from the east side you might want to go down the A3 instead.

The M3 and M3 slip road closures have been a real pain in the arse for goodness knows how long!
Be pleased when they have it finished.

Any chance Mini Cooper Day could move to a more central location ?

Bicester for example ?

A lot of people have said this over the last few years but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

Beaulieu's a long established Mini event and has become something of a pilgrimage for many. It's a stonking event but considering that I've made about half a dozen of them in the last 25 years+ which speaks volumes. Most if not all MCR events are on the South coast, and I can't ever see that changing. That's not a complaint just an observation. I've run stuff up here over the years and the level of support in the North within the club compared to the South has never been strong enough to warrant developing them. It's just the way it is. On the other hand the BMC have proved that Mini events in the Midlands can be very successful so it does make you wonder!

Yes, it’s a fair point about having the event at a more central location. The reason it is at Beaulieu is simple, it’s because back in 1982 it seemed like a good idea at the time! Along with Dave Nutland, Keith Redwood, Mike Hardy and a few helpers we decide to run what we called the ‘Mini Cooper Day Out at Beaulieu’. It was logical as Beaulieu was only about 25 miles from where we all lived. There was nothing ‘National’ about it in those days and remember we are talking of 4 years before the Mini Cooper Register was founded. At the time I don’t think any of us ever dreamed of how it would develop over the years. Our priority was 1982, not 2017! That first event, on the hard standing arena, was a success and we attracted a total of 32 cars including our own! I understand that it has grown a bit since then!

As time went on the name was changed to the National Mini Cooper Day at Beaulieu. I’ve noticed that this year there has been a further change and it’s now called the National Mini Day at Beaulieu. Personally I think that’s a great shame. I think I know why it was done, it was an attempt to try and attract more people to the event but all Mini (and MINI) owners have always been welcomed to the event anyway, so what’s the problem? It’s almost as though the word ‘Cooper’ has become a dirty word. What next? The Mini Cooper Register will change its name and become the Mini Register in an effort to attract more members?!

Going back to the original point of location, perhaps the MCR should consider running two events each year? The National Mini Cooper Day at Beaulieu in June and another with a slightly different name, say in September, in the Midlands, or perhaps somewhere like Nottingham or Sheffield? That way it should satisfy everyone. However probably easier said than done!

Graham

You could say the same about most events if you have to travel to them . So what about moving the mk1 performance day nearer to the south ? ... ken

Is not Gaydon a logical and more central place to hold it?

It has been held further up the country, Duxford for one, and the smaller event at Curborugh, the problem, as with all events, is finding people to run them in their own time and help out on the day, I'd not even noticed the name had changed !
