Spider, you hit the nail on the head. If the product is designed by a company based in somewhere like the USA but manufactured in China to the spec they lay down then it is often of high quality. Take Logitech products for example. All good stuff.

It's when the Chinese are given a free rein then often what they churn out is of poor quality.

A little OT, but I think goes to the heart of this.

A friend who was working in small construction needed some toggle bolts. He had one that he gave to his runner and he said '300'.

An hour later, the runner came back with 300 toggle bolts, all nicely plated, but they were one piece, the screw, the toggle, the body, all made as one piece and so couldn't be done up, let alone toggled!

Seem he just ran down the street and had them made.

As far as droning endlessly on about how crap new parts are here all the time, wouldn't it be more constructive to have a thread where people could say what the best part option they found was?

That would be very useful.

I agree, and especially for the safety critical parts (ball joints, bearings, etc.), and those made of rubber (engine mounts, CV and steering boots, etc.).

As already mentioned 'Delphi' are a very large automotive component supplier worldwide, who make parts of high precision such as fuel injection systems and have a comprehensive quality control system throughout the organisation. The various Mini parts like track rod ends and knuckle joints that they still manufacture do seem to be of high quality.

I think in the general discussion about parts quality we are missing the pertinent point of the original post. A trader is knowlingly or unknowlingly selling what are assumed to be fake parts.
Its no good if we all turn around and say the the best TRE is the genuine Rover boxed one, if the genuine one we buy is indeed a cheap knockoff in a nice box.
I think it merits further checking and then reporting back.
