Looks like it was Stan Griffin/Chris Dickenson in a Mini Cooper 998 registered GMV 350J. The registration is from July 1971 but the car has external hinges and a Mk 2 Cooper grille.

So, LAT, unfortunately, was a strikeout. They found nothing.

You need someone with a collection of Motoring News from 1969/70/71. There is a photo of it in there, bottom of the left hand page, always remember it because I remembered the reg number at the time. As I said, red/white and 12" Minilites.

I haven't looked at 1970 onwards but I'm confused by the 1969 Bristowe rally listing.

The 15/16 March 69 Bristowe has T.Griffin/A.Whiteman starting at number 148 in a 1275 S (no reg. no.) and retiring.

The 1/2 November 69 Shenstone has B.Griffin/J.Lunn starting number 30 in an S reg. no. 289JOB and finishing 14th.

Both events were Motoring News Championship rounds and both were "road" rallies (the 68 Bristowe was a forest stage event).
I can find no other Griffins or a 289JOB entered in MN rallies 1966-69. That in itself suggests the Bristowe and Shenstone Griffins might be different people given the difference in seeding and result with no other MN appearances in between. Initials are notoriously difficult to take from entry lists as all entry forms were hand written in those days. As "one off" entries it would be a bit strange to pick one in the Peak district and one in the south west. (My "one off" MN entry in 69 was my "local" event ie. nearest start to London, the Dursley)

I can't recall what Stan Griffin was doing rally wise then. He lived fairly near me (and was a policeman in Hampton). He did the 71 RAC and had a bit part in the film of it "From Harrogate it Started" in his Mini. That I believe arose from his school mate Keith Moon and the Who doing the soundtrack to the film (and later of course buying him a works spec Escort). I assume he must have done some major events before the 71 RAC but are we sure he's the Griffin here?

Getting back to this. I asked Martin Whittaker if he could find anything, as he built a database with the MN results. Interestingly, he sent back a spreadsheet with 3 tabs, MN/Welsh/RAC. The latter 2 are Stan Griffin but the first one is Bernie Griffin (with John Lunn as Nav). The tab also goes on to list the other rallies Pete notes. So, I think we may be talking about 2 Griffins here.

It also shows B Griffin with a Cooper S in 76 (Illuminations) and 78 (Bolton Midnight) but by then there is no way it was 289 JOB, it would have been far too tired.

Must have pulled results back on the same tab because they have the same name. Ok, so still looking at those early 70s rallies and hopefully some 60s turn up also.

Which year's Welsh? I can't see Stan Griffin 71/2 but 71 has B.M. Griffin/M.J.Grantham at No.94 in a 1275 S, 289JOB.

The Griffin results start in 1969. Was it being rallied by a different privateer or was it a daily driver? Simon you said you spoke to the first owner a few years ago, do you know?

Wasn't looking at such low numbers in 71/2 Welsh - he had no right to such high seedings. 1971 entry list is a 998 Cooper, XDL525. 1972 is 998 Cooper, GMV350J.
