Re: Cooper S engine values
Recast blocks have been a long time coming, I remember talking about their imminent arrival back in 2009! Anyone got more info on WHEN?

Re: Cooper S engine values
I didn't see the original comments about S engines being worth 10 - 12 grand all day. But I have certainly NEVER seen or heard of one go for that sort of money, ever.
I find it hard to believe that even a NOS crated S engine (of which I do know of a couple) would be sold at that sort of price.
In my experience the £2,500 - £3,500 maybe £5,000 at a push sort of price seems more "normal" to me. As Simon has said earlier in this thread he has 2 fully rebuilt S engines available now at £3,000 each & he works on these every day for his living. I reckon he knows where the market lies.
Therer are certainly people who like to over inflate prices, TBH I don't think the danger of doing this is to cause parts to be remanufactured (which is only ever a good thing) but it is to increase the danger of a huge crash in prices. I still thing that Minis are long overdue a large "corrrection". Good for buyers, not so great for sellers.

Patterns have been made & a couple of test castings have been poured, but other more profitable ventures are currently taking priority.

Re: Cooper S engine values
How about UK Pnd 10k – 12k for a fully rebuild complete 1070 S engine ready to be dropped in with all the correct parts fitted; original 1070 block, correct clutch housing, flywheel cover, radiator, spark plug caps, distributor, carbs, rocker cover, gearbox, dip stick tube etc etc.

Re: Cooper S engine values
I'd say even less, this would be around the top 5K mark, if I was looking for an engine I would be looking for one to be re-worked so that after it had been through the machine shop (that's Southam to you and me
) you would have a known quality engine, this is no offence to anyone else that does engine work, just they way I prefer to do things, trusting that a fully assembled unit has been done properly and dropping a load of cash on it only to find there's a fault with it wouldn't be my idea of fun.

Rest assured, your only shooting yourselves in the foot because if the prices get to high some person will come along and have them re-cast and devalue the originals completely. If your stupid enough to pay it fair enough but, I've only ever felt disappointment driving a standard S so they are worth no more than anything else in my eyes, as I'd much rather use a good A+ block and put up with the snobs pointing and saying it has the wrong engine in it.. its like water of a ducks back..![]()
The intent of my OP wasn't to blow smoke anywhere , it was to try and justify comments made by another poster that 1275S engines are £10-12K all day, which I'm pretty sure from the responses isn't sounding anywhere near true.
As for performance comparisons, Chris they're a 50 year old design, what are you expecting??![]()
If people want the original spec engine in their Cooper S, does that make them a snob? The market will always level itself, so if there's a short supply they'll be worth strong money, whether we like it or not.
Guess what's in my latest track S? Yup, A+!![]()
If you're looking for snobbery mate, you're on the wrong forum.
Nah Pete , you miss read my post! I wasn't calling someone a snob for having a S in there car.. nor was i specifically saying you were blowing.. I was calling the people that go round at shows pointing out every fault they can find "snobs" your telling me there aren't snobs out there? You in all your years of being at mini shows haven't come across this!?

As for looking for snobbery? when did I say that?

By the way, I love your comment about your latest track S, you sounded like Angelina Jolie adopting a etheopian child but instead your adopting a A+ donkey
I'm not trying to upset you, it's only banter!

What I say below is NOT meant personally, but
"I'm not trying to upset you, it's only banter!"
IMHO, Banter is the last resort of the "gobshite", and "banter" is rarely meant to do less than annoy or belittle.
I'm be happy to see the MK1 Forum as a "Banter free zone".

Must admit, I've heard some tutting at these shows but then if people want to 'show' their cars it sort of comes with the territory. There's always a large piece of irony pie involved aswell, ie people licking the bumpers of part number perfect show cars that you know full well started life in an envelope

Such is life and each to their own, you need to grow a thicker skin Chris, or wear earplugs!

I still don't get it!? Hahaha! I'm not offended by it so why do I need to grow thicker skin? reacting to what I've said? Surely I'm not the one who needs to wear ear plugs or have thicker skin? If I was directing at you I'd say @pete I didn't do that, the thread was all about opinions wasn't it? I was trying to lighten the atmosphere in my previous post.
Mark, I know this is your site but you have basically called me a gobshite for having a different opinion!? Well i shall consider myself told off..
By the way There is loads of banter on this site.. why single me out?

PLEASE READ MY ORIGINAL POST! When I made my comments, I did it with a GREAT BIG BOLD WARNING SAYING
"What I say below is NOT meant personally,"
This meant that what I said was not meant personally !! i.e. It wasn't directed at anyone in particular, it was simply a comment on the currently common expression ""It's only Banter", an expression I genuinely hate for the following reason.
99 times out of 100 if someone follows comments they made with the expression "it's only banter" what it actually means is "I know I have been offensive to someone, but I don't really give a shit, but by pretending my comments are made in a light hearted way I think I'll be allowed to get away with it. This assumption is usually misguided.
Yes, you are absolutely correct there is a lot of gentle bashing & mickey taking done on the site, but most of this is done in a spirit of genuine friendliness & respect therefore doesn't need the suffix "It's only banter" as this fact is obvious.
Going back to what was previously said about needing a thicker skin, your comments above are a great illustration of this. If you had a slightly thicker skin (and actually read what people typed) you wouldn't feel like I called you a Gobshite or singled you out in any way, BECAUSE I DIDN'T.
Now, please can we get back to the discussion in the title.

Yes Mark, I read it. It has much better grammar than mine.
I accept what you are saying, I now realise I should have called it "gentle bashing" and not the "B" word
@Pete, this I genuinely mean!
Sorry mate, I appoligise if I caused any offence to you;
In my defence (everyone) Just to clarify when I was at school and studied gcse English (wasn't my forte) this was what I learnt as the meaning of the "B" word .. I'm sorry, i guess it can be intercepted differently! so from now on I will keep shtum

Anyway this is all Jose's fault for his £2K crank and £12K engine claims.

Re: Cooper S engine values
FJ blocks, 970 and 1071 engines seem to be the valued ones.
I had it put to me recently that a complete "wet" 1071 mill would sell in Japan for $AUD15K.
I was looking (and still am in a way) for an FJ block as a build project but the local $AUD5K cost of one was off-putting to say the least.

If one's interest is mainly "banter", FB or Twitter should be their intended destination, not here.

Re: Cooper S engine values
2-3000 is a good price for an s engine considering people are asking up to a 1000 plus for a run of the mill 1275 .i don't think Pete is trying to inflate s engine prices but it would have to be something very special to come anywhere near those figures .i think using the word snob was the wrong terminology anorak seems more correct and we've all met a few in our time.
