Something I always do, and I've seen others mention, is to:

Use a fine lapping / grinding paste to bed-in the ball pin to the housing cap and the little "under pad", on the front suspension joints.

Do this on the bench (or using a scrap upright) so you can clean off ALL the paste afterwards.
You only need to rub them together for a few minutes.

This takes the 'high spots' off the mating faces, and when assembled, you will find that you can shim the joint correctly, and get full movement of the ball pin, without it jamming.
And, you don't have to re-shim them again after the next MOT...
