Post by davidmuir »

Hi, how are the door switches held in? Driver's door switch is jammed in and u/s- do they just pull out of the 'A' post? Are the original steel ones still available?
Thanks, D

The clips have 4 spring loaded clip thinggies behind. So you have to wiggle and pull at the same time. As sure as god made little green apples they'll be rusted solid though. Just be brutal. And while they're out and you are left with a small hole (stick the purple/black wire to the outside to prevent it falling in.....) make sure that you spray deep down and upwards into that cavity with Supertrol 001 grease as shown in a small article in the how-I did-it section. I think that the switches are still available.

Switches are NLA and command a very high price. If you can salvage existing switches it is very cost effective.

FYI, Intermotor made a generic part which is a direct fit on Mk1 mini. Also used on many other period British cars such as MGs.

I picked up a card full from eBay, $50 for 10x NOS switches.

Great tip thank you!

Expensive, but still better than the nonsense ebay prices.

As a matter of passing interest, if you have an ex cop car then as a general rule the interior light DOOR switches were were disconnected. That way, the interior light could only be manually operated. The reason was that the interior light would reduce your night vision ability as soon as you opened the door. The passenger side would often have one of those flick-out or bendy/flexy arm lights screwed to the passenger door for the same reason - so that the driver didn't get the light

Not a lot of people know that!

My car had the hole for a swing-out light in the top door rail but no light.......... Until I stripped the car down for restoration and there it was under the (rotten) lower trim
