oil pick up

Post by Astro »

Hello,

is an oyl-flector shield an alternative for a central oil pick up or does it just protect the crank from the oil at high revs?

An oil shield is designed to stop the oil sloshing around in the sump & absorbing extra energy. It is NOT an alternative to a central oil pick up.

these oil shields are looking like the shields used in BMW, Renault Alpine and other engines to save the oil pick up. I tried it in Hockenheim without a central pick up and there were no problems with the oil pressure. Was it just luck?

Maybe not. But personally I wouldn't use ANY non central oil pick up in a Mini Box.

Do you have any reason for sticking with the original item?

if you are running a dog box or have some problems, this very small sieve is closed at once. But I fear using a central pickup without a sieve.

Did anybody made their own central oil pickup pipe?

For a long time I did, but only because the money the local guys were asking was out of this world (like $100 AUD + back in the early 80's - you could buy a whole Mini for not much more!), but these days, the price is far more realistic and it's also so much easier buying from the UK that I don't bother.

I have found with the off the shelf ones they sometimes need a 'tweak' and also they are of a slightly different design to the original ST ones that the opening in to the pipe is no longer closed off on the top, doesn't seem to be an issue.

Like Mark, I would not build a box with a standard pick up unless it was for an original restoration.
