Change date from remote to rod box

Post by Andrew1967 »

Does anyone know if the ADO16 went from remote to rod change at the same time as the Mini ?

i was also curious about this,

as i have bought a 1971 MG1300 for spares and it had rod change gearbox, it all looked very neatly done, but 71 would be too early for a rod change.

did rod change ADO16's had different tunnels as in the Mini's ? anyone can share a pic of a rod change ADO16 tunnel ?

Thanks
Luis

Tunnel is the same. I had both rod change and remote change on several 1972 cars. Some had rod change while the VIN was earlier than some with remote change. So, I think it was a matter of 'take what is available from the shelf' when built. It may however be the case that Belgian built cars changed over earlier than British built cars...

No 1971 ADO16 cars ever had rod change gearboxes. We think about October 1972 is the changeover period. My December 1971 VP has a remote gearbox :D :D

So an early 73 built car would be able to accept a remote box without any hacking about of the tunnel etc ?

The tunnels of all ADO16s will take the rod-change gearbox. I've put rod-change gearboxes in Mk1 automatics in the past. :D

Very early ones in late 1972 had the rod change but rubber couplings for the driveshafts. As soon as the Allegro was all tooled up and ready to go, the pot joints were fitted. The rod change/rubber coupling power units are very rare and I've only ever seen two - both on Minis.

My friend has a Teal Blue 1300 GT built November 1972 and very original. It has a rod-change gearbox and rubber couplings. :D

Of the 6 ADO16's I have had (all of 1972), 4 of them had this combination... I will fit a remote box with pot joints and upper engine steady to my 1972 1300GT: from the worst possible combination to the best possible combination
