"Although he’s most likely to be remembered as the man who led the design team that penned the Morris Marina, Roy Haynes’ work at BMC and BLMC went much deeper than that. From the Pressed Steel Fisher studios in Cowley, Haynes masterminded a design strategy based on platform sharing, which could have vastly improved the firm’s profitability in the post-merger years. Signs of this are littered around BMC and BLMC’s product plans between 1967 and 1969, when he made the biggest impact. He feverishly led the ill-fated restyling of the 1100/1300 range under the auspices of Project ADO22, tried to develop the BMC 1800, worked to make a hatchback Mini, and also develop more sporting versions of existing cars."

Interesting article, but to my mind the answer to the question posed is NO.

The man who led the design team that penned the Morris Marina - NOT A GREAT START

Masterminded a design strategy based on platform sharing - THAT NEVER CAME ABOUT

He feverishly led the ill-fated restyling of the 1100/1300 range under the auspices of Project ADO22 - FAILED

Tried to develop the BMC 1800 - FAILED

Worked to make a hatchback Mini - FAILED

and also develop more sporting versions of existing cars - FAILED.

I do hope I don't come over as overly negative :lol:

I had a look at one of the concepts

The wheels on this one look remarkable similar to the wheel on a Fiat Dino Coupe, as does the rear wing line. Did Bertone have some influence.




That platform sharing would never have worked because of the in-fighting between the managers of Austin/Morris, Triumph, Rover, MG and Jag. And the fact there just was not the cash to invest in such a huge project.

I'd say the exact opposite.

The Marina sold strongly and made BL a lot of money.

Platform sharing had never been done before. It made perfect sense, and still does.

The restyled Pinin 1100/1300 and 1800 would have been a huge success and put the wind up Citroen.


He had the right ideas but lacked the backing of management. There have been many thesis on how BL could/should have been run but there was no reason why they could not have been making 2-3 million cars a year with Longbridge, Cowley. Solihull, Canley and Browns Lane all working flat out. Roy Haynes and Joe Edwards would have made a great team.
