I would also not expect a difference between auto and manual when the same type of joint is concerned. However, auto's have hardy spicer joints and all other have rubber joints until somewhere in 1973 when pots where introduced for auto and manual (probably around the same time it happened for the Mini.

I edited my previous post for a suggestion on how to get a set of pot joint shafts: the pot joint inner bit does not fit to an earlier shaft as the splines are different.

I do expect that pot joints shafts are longer than rubber or hardy spicer shafts as the pivot point for pot joints is just before the end of the shaft while for the other types is beyond the length of the shaft (at the center of the rubber or hardy spicer joint).

If you cannot get a set of Mk3 shafts, Metro long and mini long shaft is what you want I believe.

There is a caveat. I have not yet fitted this setup into a car to definitively confirm that this works. I took a punt buying some metro shafts from the UK to Aus based on someone posting that a long mini and a long metro shaft had been used successfully. I had tried to get a hold of some Mk3 shafts with no luck.

I took a pair of mini rubber uni shafts and compared their length to mini pot joint shafts. The extra length of the pot shafts is the important dimension so you want shafts that are longer then the 1100 rubber uni shafts by the same amount. I then took the short 1100 rubber uni shaft and compared it to a mini long pot shaft and a metro long pot shaft to the 1100 long rubber uni shaft. The difference in length is essentially the same as with mini rubber uni and pot shafts.

If Rich can get an actual set of Mk3 shafts remade, I would be keen on a pair!

cheers

Kevin

Hi Rich,

the MG1300 i've bought for spares had pot joint shafts.
They are still there, i can take the left one out and will let you know.
I also have a NOS pot joint shaft ( no part number ) wrapped in paper and hand written "Austin 1300"....
i will remove the left one from the car ( no engine ) and compare both.

will be able to do it only next Weekend.

Cheers
Luis

Hi Rich,

ok i took the LH pot joint shaft from my 1970 MG1300, i do not know how it got pot joing shafts and rod change gearbox!
it is NOT the same length as the mini long ( RH ) shaft , as we all suspected. It is ~8,5mm shorter .
In the pictures from top to bottom:
Used Long RH Metro shaft
NOS Shaft wrongly wrapped in paper saying "Austin 1300", it is same length as a RH mini one
Used MG1300 shaft, ~8,5mm shorter than the RH long mini one. Note it has an additional ring embossed.. the RH shaft ( kept it in the car ) has the same ring.
Used RH Mini shaft
Used LH mini short shaft

I'm happy to loan you the shaft Rich.

Cheers
Luis

interesting

I will have to have a look at the nos allegro one (same as a 1300, or so the part number says!) to see if it has the second ring

might be an easy way to tell them apart from the others

good sleuthing luis!
