There's no rhyme or reason behind failing units - I have some still going and knocking on for 250,000 miles, although from that original set of four one hose failed in Switzerland after c.80,000 miles, whilst two from a donor car didn't make it past 40,000 miles; the internals failing on one, the hose on the other.

Over the years, I would guess to have travelled in excess of 400,000 miles in various ADO16's and have experienced 3 failures - 2 on the road and one in the garage.

I've no empirical evidence to support this but would suggest that they do not respond very well to having the hose angle altered if work is carried out that involves removal and refitting. Also, bear in mind that the hose is rubber and so ought to be kept clean of oil or solvents....just as you would with any other rubber product that you wanted to last.

Well, I just went to check the Apache was all OK after my recent front hose repair. Checked the rear ones and bugger, one of them is weeping a tiny bit of fluid on the hose. ( same side as the front one ). So off with the rear one and back to Ian's for another re-hose. Good news is I managed to get it off OK without dismantling the radius arm.
Car has only covered 35000 kilometres but hey, it is over 40 years old. Just waiting for the other two to pop now.

The rear's should come out without removing the radius arm....it's just that my car got rear ended in 1994 and was "repaired" by supposed ADO16 specialists who basically cocked up the rear subframe geometry.....a better job could have been done by measuring things with hand an finger widths!.....it's a wonder the car still does drive straight, doesn't wear out tyres and doesn't crab - so given that, best leave well alone!
